WELCOME TO SILVER CITY ROTARY

The Silver City Rotary Club Scholarship Program

Support for the continuing education of our youth is a major objective of Rotary. Through the Silver City Rotary Club’s Scholarship Program, we can achieve that goal. At the same time, we can effectively reinvest some of our annual fundraising proceeds back into a project that truly benefits our local community.

Working closely with the regional High Schools, our Rotary Club makes annual scholarship awards to deserving graduates, thus helping them pursue their educational goals. Here is more information about our Scholarship Program in a FAQ format.

What kind of Rotary Scholarships are awarded?
Silver City Rotary Scholarships are given to students entering a four year university, or attending a community college with the intent to transfer to a four year university program.

How many Scholarships does the Club give?
Depending on the availability of funds and the goals of our applicants, we award two to four Scholarships each year. In 2007, the Club gave two scholarships.

Where do funds for the Rotary Scholarship Program come from?
The Scholarship Program is funded from part of the net proceeds of our fund raising events. The Club’s Board of Directors determines the specific dollar amount for the Scholarship Program through the Club’s yearly budgeting process.

How may I contribute to the Silver City Rotary Scholarship Fund?
Checks may be made payable to “Silver City Rotary – Scholarship Fund,” P.O. Box 2828, Silver City, NM 88062.

What are the eligibility standards for a Rotary Scholarship?
To be eligible for a Scholarship, a student must be in the current graduating class of their high school and a resident of the Silver City area for the past two years. Relatives of Rotarians are eligible for a Scholarship.

What are the criteria for choosing a Rotary Scholarship recipient?
The following, equally weighted, selection factors are used:

  1. Clearly defined objectives incorporated in a plan of action to achieve them.
  2. Demonstrated work experience, particularly if related to career objectives.
  3. Participation in school activities and team sports. Special consideration is given for an applicant’s volunteer work with community service projects.
  4. Academic performance
  5. The quality and content of an essay discussing this year's Rotary theme.
  6. The impression of the applicant from a personal interview.

How is the Rotary Scholarship Program run?
In mid-March of each year, the Scholarship Committee (as overseen by the Club’s Vocational Service Director) reviews the applications and essays from High School seniors and selects approximately 8 candidates for a personal interview. The Committee meets with each of the candidates in April, and then chooses the scholarship winners based on their application materials and their interview. The awards are given in May. The scholarship recipients are invited to attend a Club luncheon in June to talk briefly about their college plans.
