Guests: Linda Marquez Tollefson and Valerie Zech (our speakers), Elaine Carlson, and Jeannette Medrano, Silver Schools Nursing Coordinator.
Announcements:
Peter F. "Greetings from Sunny Kellerman without a happy face. Husband Harry is in Las Cruces Memorial Hospital."
Tom: "A meeting was held prior to this meeting. 1) Vouchers for the Hygiene Project --the nurses identify the kids needing glasses or dental work. 2) We are working on a Global Grant to assist the Tarahumara Indians south of Chihuahua. Rosie and Tom plan to go there in February and want to take small baggies of toothpaste, soap, toothbrushes to give out, and are looking for donations of those items to take. Rosie will bag the items and she needs them by February 5
Program: Lucy introduced our speakers: Valerie Zech and Linda Marques Tollefson. They both work at the Center for Health Innovation (CHI) Public Health Institute (PHI). Valerie is the Grant County Community Health Coordinator and Linda is the Coordinator of the Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition in Grant County. They are shown in the picture above with Rotarians Leslie Bush, Lucy Falley and Tom Bates. Linda is at left and Valerie at right.
Valerie discussed the work of the Public Health Institute in helping organizations and communities to find the support and resources they need. The Institute helps with capacity building and finding technical assistance services as well as establishing community-based programs and with policy development. Linda's work focuses primarily on educating the youth of our area about the dangers of substance abuse and its impact on families and the wider community.
