Tuesday, September 30, 2025:

President Ray Goellner presided.
Ray led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Tom Bates gave the invocation.
Jerry Ouzts led the recitation of the Four-Way Test.

Guests: DaLue Mize and Sandra Jones from Indian Springs Ranch; Estrella Newby, Liz Pendleton Treasurer NM BARC, Michelle McWhorter, and Taylor McWhorter.

Announcements:
Ray introduced DaLue Mize and Sandra Jones from Indian Springs Ranch and Maggie Callaway presented them with a $1500 check, proceeds from the bake sale.
Maggie said she thought the bake sale should be done annually because of the great work the Ranch does, both for our community and nationally. DaLue was most appreciative and said the donation was going towards buying hay to feed the horses. She explained to our guests that Indian Springs is a retreat for veterans, law enforcement, and first responders. They take them out for
a three day horseback riding retreat, totally unplugged from society to help them reset. It is totally free for them.
Rosie Higgs announced the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church will be having their annual fall bazaar on November 8.
Mark Richard reminded everyone that tomorrow is the beginning of the eradication of polio effort by Rotary, and we are doing a fundraiser through an exhibition of his work at The Geisler
Studio. All money collected from the sale of his work is donated to the polio campaign. He thanked Art and Maggie for helping with the reception.
Ray presented a Service Above Self Award plaque to Taylor McWhorter to recognize her work with animal rescue. Taylor said that she had donated 700 pounds of dog food, blankets and treats to NM BARC and she also fostered a dog for them. She called on Liz Pendleton to explain what NM BARC does. Miss Pendleton explained they are a spay and neuter operation and trying to create “no kill” policy in the shelters focusing especially on the mining districts. She thanked us for Rotary’s generous donation of $250, which we had made in Taylor's honor.

Ray said we had two membership applications, one from AJ Lindsey and the other from Matt Stephens. He said there would be a brief board meeting afterwards to review the applications.
Jim Callender said he knew a young lady who was interested in RYLA next year so we may need to plan on this in the Silver City Rotary Foundation budget for next year. Art and Maggie each volunteered to be drivers to take students to or from the RYLA camp.

Jim said he and Tom had resupplied the schools with hygiene supplies. They spent $364.52.

The next item Ray brought up was the Strategic Plan. Art made a motion to approve the plan with one minor change to refer to the club as the Rotary Club of Silver City throughout. Tom seconded and the motion carried with the change being made.

Ray said that he believed we had had an interesting dialogue with last week’s speaker from the Gospel Mission, and he thought it was a good thing for us to do periodically because we should be concerned about what is going on in our community. He asked for comments. Through discussion, it was determined that perhaps SPIN should be invited to discuss some community issues and concerns.

Jim asked everyone to keep their eyes and ears open for other possible awardees of the Service Above Self plaque. Art Thorn asked if we should do a press release on our two presentations today. Maggie said she would write text if he would send her pictures, and she would get it to the Press.

Ray asked how everyone felt about doing something social once a quarter. After discussion about several different venues, Ray asked if there was any interest in going to the Shakespeare Ghost town on a Saturday. Ray said he would check into this for November 15.

Tom said most of us had received the email from Rotary suggesting we fight hunger by getting publicity and making change. The Hunger Strike initiative starts tomorrow and goes through November. We have been asked to get the community involved, maybe even fasting for awhile. They have good prizes. Maggie asked if he had any suggestions about how we might get involved. He said we first had to decide if we wanted to get involved. It’s a fundraiser and fifty percent of the proceeds go to organizations fighting hunger and the other half to Rotary. After discussion, it was decided it was too short a timeframe to put something together.

Happy Dollars: Dorothy Moore had a very good time at The Commons gala and thanked the club for the free tickets. Art Thorn wanted to thank physical therapists for their great work, which
may help him to avoid knee surgery.

Today was a club assembly, so there was no speaker.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 pm.
