Announcements:
Tom Bates talked about club service projects and initial thoughts are to do something with the Senior Center, such as involving young people and doing an international meal around February 2025. They are also thinking about meeting with seniors prior to Christmas to help them with their online gift shopping. Dan Otero is checking state requirements. Called for a meeting next week after the club meeting. Asked for input and whether or not the ideas would have the club’s support.
Art announced that next week Yasser Murga, District Governor, will be here. Thanks to Maggie for putting the gift basket together that will be given to him and auctioned off at the next club he visits. Mentioned some topics that we will discuss with Yasser Murga. There will be a short board huddle after the meeting.
Mark Richard reminded everyone of the mariachi concert for polio on October 26. Art said that we currently have four sponsors, and he has sponsor invitation letters if anyone would like one.
To remind everyone of the upcoming bake sale on September 7, Dorothy Moore brought cookies that were passed around for everyone’s enjoyment. Jim Callender reminded the board that they will be meeting with the District Governor about an
hour before the regular meeting next week.

Program:

Art introduced our speaker Victoria Chick of the Southwest Regional Museum of Art and Art Center. This museum is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to foster creativity, to gather community spirit, to educate the public, and to create visual art. This idea of this center grew from her desire to have a place to house her extensive art collection. While Silver City has great galleries, it does not have an art museum. The museum will meet the community’s need to experience fine art through the following programs: loaned exhibitions, art films and
discussions; three galleries with two of those galleries changing exhibits every other month and one gallery changing a traveling exhibit each year. There will be hands-on opportunities for all
ages with programs such as clay camp for ceramics, interactive activities in the Museum’s galleries, and art education programs for young people and adults. The Museum’s board of directors has authorized a capital campaign to raise $1.2 million to fund the purchase and renovation of a building to house the museum. Dr. James Skee is chairman of the campaign committee. Victoria invited us to consider joining the capital campaign group.
After a question and answer period, Art presented Victoria with a small gift.
