Announcements:
Art told us that we received a Thank You card from the Roswell Club, thanking us for the contribution our club provided for the fire relief.
District 5280 is requesting donations to support victims of the CA fires. Linda Telaak reminded us this request has to go before the board (always the case if the amount is over $500). Then it has to be approved by the club and finally the Foundation board. Ray Goellner, President Elect, will add this to next week's board meeting agenda.
Art followed up with Jim in regard to reaching out to Taylor McWhorter the recipient of a “Service Above Self Award”. Jim will update the club once he has communicated with Taylor. Learn more about Taylor and her works here:
Abraham Clay, 8 years old, selflessly helped feed and provide some warm clothing items to members of SPIN, the Silver City Gospel Mission and others in town. Learn more about Abraham’s works here:
Mark Richard suggested partnering with Abraham for a clothing donation arrangement Peter Falley suggested the club create a “Service Above Self Award” for K-12 graders. $200.00 suggested donation to the 501C3 of the recipients choice and a plaque. Mark Richard suggested the donation be $250.00. Jim Callender said this should go the Club Board. Ray Goellner will add it to the board agenda for next week.
Mark Richard suggested we create a clothing donation, possibly partnering with the High Schools, to provide to the victims of the CA fires. A possible collaboration with a LA area Rotary Club.
Program:
Dr. Phillip (Phil) Schoenberg, Associate Professor of English Composition and Philosophy at Western New Mexico University. He is also the Faculty Senate President, and he said he had been asked to talk to us about recent developments at WNMU.
Phil started out with a brief and interesting bio, he is from the central coast of CA, from a town called Prunedale. He told us about his father’s occupations as he finds a child’s fathers occupation to be important. His father worked for Firestone making tires, moved to Mexico, sold firewood and became an entrepreneur, large equipment was his specialty. Phil is a 1st generation college graduate for his family. After failing his 1st year of college, he found an interest in Philosophy. Attending Roman Catholic Seminary for about 6 months he decided he would go back to college to pursue his undergraduate education in Philosophy. He obtained his Bachelor's from San Jose State, then went on to get his PhD at UNM. In 2017 he moved to Silver City to work at WNMU and fell in love with the area. He is married with two children ages 12 and 8. His wife works for Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, doing remote work in their public relations department. This year, he is up for promotion full Professor at WNMU!
Phil, drawing on his extensive experience with the university and recent close attention to the recent resignation of Joseph Shepard, and his subsequent pay-out, answered several questions from the membership, and clarified misunderstandings, to the best of his ability.
