Program:
Ray introduced Bart Roselli to give us an overview on what’s going on at the Silver City Museum this year. Bart, by means of a slide, introduced us to John Cotton Danna, who started the American Association of Museums. Bart is guided by Danna’s quote, “If you want to become a great museum, find what your community’s greatest needs are and fit the museum to them.” One of the things the Museum did this past year was write a mission statement to state what the museum does, who they do it for and why they do it: "The Silver City Museum serves Grant County residents and visitors, using authentic records of the region’s multicultural past to foster informed perspectives on the present."
There are three big areas that the museum devotes its resources to: programs for every aspect of our community, exhibits about Silver City and Grant County, and preserving a record of the past. One of the big projects is to offer a big picture view of our community - Silver City 101 - and to make the exhibit interactive. A new exhibit is entitled Healers and Heroines. It seeks to document the origins of the health care system in Silver City and Grant County, past and present, and of the important role of women in the development of that system
The museum will continue to do its annual ice cream social, Day of the Dead and Victorian Christmas; three events that have been going on for about 40 years.
The museum is involved in helping Bayard preserve its history by securing a grant for the restoration of the Bayard Union Hall, which was the focal point of the 1950s Salt of the Earth strike.
Also the Museum is expanding its outreach to the schools by bringing fourth grade classes to the museum each year. The plan is to do that with 8th grade classes as well. The Museum has signed an agreement with the Silver City Theater to work together to create historical scripts for use at the Museum. A new project involves a large collection of documents and artifacts donated by the Lime family to document the Chinese contributions to Silver City. It will take several months to record the items in the collection and prepare them to be exhibited at the Museum.
After a question and answer period, the meeting was adjourned.
