This meeting was a club assembly, so that we did not have a speaker.
Mark Richard reminded everyone of the polio benefit concert on October 26. Art said that we are set for sponsors and are lining up a radio show with Joe Neri. Peter Falley will be joining Art on that program. Our main goal now is to get people in the seats. Tickets are available at First Savings, the Museum, Mark has some, and they can be purchased online. Sales have been less than brisk but it should be a great concert.
Art announced that Mayor Ken Ladner will be the speaker next week. He also told us that we have received a check for $567.40 from the Cliff Gila Fair Association; after Rotary takes its percentage, it will be combined with the money received last year for a contribution to the Fair for some worthy purpose. Art will talk to Niel McDonald about how the money is to be used.
The Bi-District conference will be in Juarez on November 15-16. Tom Bates is going. He and anyone joining him from the club will drive to El Paso and transportation will be provided from there to the conference location in Juarez. Art said that clubs, mostly from District 4110 in northern Mexico, will present projects and ask for funding. Our club delegation will decide while there what projects the club should support and will give completed commitment forms to the sponsors of those projects. Art asked if the club is willing to subsidize global grants this year. Kathy Eaton made a motion that we allocate $1,000 to be allocated by our delegation to global projects at the Bi-District conference; Tom Bates seconded, and the motion passed.
Tom Bates reported on the service project meeting at Q’s Bistro and said they had some great ideas. Art has his notes. Tom said we are trying to get more people interested in projects,
which hopefully will lead to better attendance and more members. Possible projects were then discussed. Mark Richard asked about partnering with other organizations, for example the
DAR, to celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary in a tree planting project. Art said that Dr. Shepard had also asked if we might entertain the idea of hosting students during Thanksgiving
by serving them a meal. Rosie said we could partner with the Marine Corps with Toys for Tots by bringing a gift for a child. Jim Callender mentioned Samaritan’s Purse as a possible project.
Jim said we might do something for the foster kids in Grant County. Maggie said she would like to see at our holiday party everyone bring a gift for donation to Toys for Tots along with a white elephant gift. After discussion of a Christmas party location, Kathy volunteered her home for the Christmas party.
Jim said they had spent $750 out of the hygiene account for products requested by the school nurses. They supplies have been been distributed to the schools. He said that they are now including the Cobre schools.
Art asked for comments on Scott Park Grill as a social gathering location. It received a thumbs down because of the noise. He asked if the idea of a once a month social gathering was a
good idea. Mark said no; he recommended we do it quarterly. No decision was reached. Maggie Callaway mentioned the difficulty of finding speakers for every meeting. Peter said the speakers attract guests. Much discussion followed. Lucy suggested having new members give a brief bio at some of the meetings could be used to fill a speaker slot. There was also a suggestion that we go back to the system of having a member commit to finding speakers for a given month. Mark agreed to line up speakers for November.
Art next asked if we wanted to continue meeting at the University. The cost and quality of the food was an issue. Jim said that if no one is buying lunch, he doesn’t know how much longer the University will allow us to meet here. Art said it was really the best space we’ve had for a speaker; we can do Zoom and computer presentations. Mark said it looks professional.
Art said that Paul Leetmae is a candidate for membership and asked if anyone else had someone in mind for membership.
