District Conference in El Paso

Tuesday, March 11, 2025:

President Art Thorn presided.
Guest: Lucy Falley

Announcements:
Peter Falley said that Peter Herzberg sent his regards and is recovering well after back surgery. Jerry Ouzts read an email from Kathy Eaton  regarding Bill Evatt and how well he is doing following his heart surgery. He is now recovering at home.
Jim Callender passed out a sheet listing applicants for the Rotary scholarship that he and Peter had prepared. Each applicant was discussed, and then the club voted to see to whom the
scholarships would be awarded. The future of the scholarship program was discussed, and it was determined that Rotary would run its own program rather than going through the University after the awarding of these scholarships. Through the voting process, the scholarships were awarded to: Jocelyn Rodriguez, Lucia Delgado, Anastasia Armijo, Maxx Todden, and Alicia Mancilla.
Peter asked if we wanted to apply for a district grant this year. They are opening the training sessions; and if we want to apply for a grant, two members have to go for training. Jim said
that we are not going to spend the grant that was awarded for hygiene and it expires June 1. We will probably have to return the money. Jim stated that we were trying to do grants that give
assistance for eye or dental exams, but there is no need for it because the Lions Club is already dealing with eye care for the kids and Medicaid and free assistance provided to school children by dentists is sufficient to deal with dental care.
Art mentioned a warming shelter that needed assistance, but it was determined that it didn’t meet grant criteria, but it might be a project. He asked for other ideas: Indian Springs Ranch,
the mining district, and the High Desert Humane Society among others were discussed, but it was decided not to pursue.
Art said that Sunny Kellerman had given him certificates for a two- person cruise and $250 from Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic. It was decided to give these certificates to the
GRMC Foundation to be auctioned at their gala in October and that the money would be split with Rotary.

Art said that we would talk about club projects on March 25. Jerry Ouzts mentioned the Epic Day of Service on May 17 that Sunny Kellerman presented at the last meeting, in which two districts were participating. Mark Richard suggested participating in the Toss no Mas program. He is going to check into this.
Jim said that, at the next meeting, Ray Goellner would have a Power Point presentation on alternative meeting sites.

Art adjourned the meeting.
