Reminder that very soon, May 6, will be the Dog/Car Wash fundraiser. Thank you Jack, for the use of the parking lot at First Savings. There will be a committee meeting directly after this meeting.

 

Sunny K. Reporting that the District Conference in Roswell was very successful. Next year it will be in Las Cruces, so hopefully more people can attend.

At the conference, Sunny K. presented the Sonny Brown "Small Business of the Year" award to Dale Rucklos and Renya Craig, owners of the Tranquil Buzz, a Silver City coffee house.

The Silver City Club received a "Club of the Year" award; only one of four received. The award is in recognition of leadership displayed this past year.

 

John Drusedum, our District Governor, gave a special award "The Quiet Rotarian Award," for the diligent work, without fanfare --given to Peter Falley.

Peter F. then told what happened to the man, Bob Barnard, who will be taking over the District Grants position. He somehow fell, injuring his face, and had to be taken to the hospital.  Three girls who were dressed in alien costumes, provided his transportation to the hospital.

 

Ray: "My wife. Satoko, and I just returned from visiting her parents in Sendai, Japan. While there we attended a Rotary meeting. That club has 120 members, meets in the Metropolitan Hotel ballroom, with a woman playing a Grand piano throughout the meeting. While the Japanese National Anthem was being played (the club's Rotary song) the members sang. Requirements for joining this club are high. Only CEO's, owners of companies, physicians are accepted." Ray and the Sendai club president (Satoko's uncle) exchanged club banners." Ray presented the Sendai banner to Niel.

"Satoko's uncle owns a company that owns "Cram Schools." Students pay to attend these schools evenings and weekends, to prepare to do well in college admission tests."

  for six concerts through the end of June, and then the price goes to $65.oo per person.

 

Armed Forces Day celebration will be on May 21, 2023, at 1 p.m., in the Bataan Memorial Park. This event is in conjunction with WNMU,  American Legion and the First Armored Division Band.

This year is the band's 50th anniversary.

 

Raul Turrieta will be the M.C.; there will be an honor guard in recognition of all the veterans in this area.

 

There will be three speakers-Cecilia Bell (Ft. Bayard Historical Preservation Society), David Morrison (American Legion), and Philip Torres (Ft. Bayard). Nothing political; the focus is on the veterans.

 

After the public concert, there will be a smaller one in the F. Bayard Medical Center, for veterans who are too frail to leave the facility.

 

People are encouraged to bring their own chairs, as there might not be sufficient seating.

 

One other item: The New Mexico Arts started a new grant called "Military in the Arts." The GCCCA is one of only ten organizations to receive a $2000.00 grant! 

 

 

Sunny K.: For a successful District Conference at which our nominees received The Sonny Brown "Small Business Award of the Year."

 

Steve: HMS Compassion for Seniors Program. The dollar amount has been raised from $500.00 per person to $2500.00!

 

Dorothy: I wanted to say thank you for the opportunity to help with the Commons--packing food.

 

Rosie: Thank you Mark for referral to a good audiologist! Max has been unable to get good results with any hearing aids. He did see the audiologist and was informed he needs surgery, a cochlear implant. We will have to go to Tucson, but now have a plan.

 

Jim: Not a happy dollar, but Fay Vowell, a former Rotarian and Provost at WNMU, passed away.

 

Niel: I have ten happy dollars. Leaving tomorrow for my oldest daughter's graduation  from BYU--3rd generation. On May 8, she will start working for me--at Edward Jones!..I am very proud and happy!

 

Business topic #1 

Venue for our meetings. After considerable discussion, which included: Sodexo will not accommodate us, discarding the previous restaurants we tried out, mainly because of background noise or food orders being very slow. 

Will Hawkins did offer a board room at Silver High.

 

A vote was taken to continue at Silver Bowling Center for the month of May. Peggy and her husband (owners) will try to expedite the speed of food orders, and they have a microphone we can use. Peggy is a former Rotarian, and is letting us use the 10th Frame Lounge gratis, and keeping the music off for that hour.
