Meeting Notes for February 1, 2022

Barbara Gabioud, our Speaker, and her husband, Ron; Art Thorn, Rotarian from Charlottesville, VA, recently moved to Silver City; Brad Holmgren, Sandy Feutz, Tom Vaughn, Cynthia Bettison, recently retired Director at WNMU Museum and now an honorary member, Debra Preusch, Tom Barry, Della Acosta, Eddie Flores and Barbara Smith.

Announcements:
Cynthia Bettison was presented with an Honorary Rotary Club membership certificate by Sunny Kellerman.
The new club website, using ClubRunner is now up. The address is the same as before: www.silvercityrotary.org. Member login is in the upper right hand corner of the home page. You may have to establish your login password if you don't already have one on the District website.
Tom Bates reported on progress in our project of getting hygiene supplies to the elementary school nursing offices.
Tom and Doug Winter will be taking donated clothing to the asylum seeker camps in Juarez. In addition to the clothing donated by club members, the Holiday Inn Express has donated a supply of blankets.
Jerry Ouzts has agreed to serve as Assistant Secretary, relieving some of the pressure on Secretary Leslie Bush.
Jim Callender said WNMU has new protocols re: Covid-19. Mask wearing is required at all times except when eating. Non-vaccinated people must have regular testing. These protocols are still in place.
Niel said he will announce his new board slate at the next meeting, which will require the club membership vote. Jim Callender said he had talked with Niel before the 1/25 meeting and Niel did say that Carlos Lucero has agreed to be president-elect and Maggie Veeder agreed to be Treasurer. More to be announced next week. The officer slate has been postponed because Niel has Covid, but he is improving.
Ray Goellner has Covid but is improving.
Program:
On February 1, 2022, Barbara Gabioud, gave a detailed presentation about “A Local Border Story”, describing the work that is being done for asylum-seeking migrants in Palomas, MX, and Deming. Slides were shown continuously showing the living conditions for the migrants. Gabioud is the coordinator for this project.
Upcoming:
Donna Pedace, the long-time coordinator of the Rotary Friendship Exchange, has sent email surveys to all Rotarians, asking if they are willing to host Rotary Friendship Exchange visitors, and whether they are interested in hosting or travel to other areas within the United States. The survey results will determine if the program will be in effect this year.
Rotary has cancelled RYLA for this year due to difficulty in maintaining social distancing between students due to Covid-19.
The Toastmasters demo is now scheduled for February 16, 2022 from 6-7 p.m. Steve Chavira has sent the Zoom link and it has been sent to all club members.
Sunny K. announced that the District Conference will be held in Albuquerque on April 7-9, 2022, at the Isleta Casino.
