The meeting as a Club Assembly, so that we had no speaker.

 

Peter F. talked about the difference between the club dues and donations going to our club, its foundation (the Silver City Rotary Foundation) and Rotary International and its foundation (The Rotary Foundation). The club and RI are tax-exempt 501(c)(4) organizations, which means that they do not pay Federal or State tax on their income, but payments to them are not tax-deductible. The foundations, on the other hand, are 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, which means that they are not only tax-exempt, but that donations to them are tax-deductible. 

 

Peter also said that we are currently celebrating the 117th anniversary of Rotary International, so this would be a great time to donate to The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund. You can do so on the rotary.org website, or on our website www.silvercityrotary.org by clicking on the Give link under the Get Involved tab, and choosing The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund as to the destination for your donation.

 

The piano concert fundraiser is coming up on April 15th. Ray Goellner will get photos of the five pianists and brief bios. 

Maggie, Jack I., Wendy and Vlad offered to be on committee to determine where funds should go.  The hospital auxillary has been mentioned as one option.

 

Jim said the Rotary Friendship Exchange for spring is cancelled due to Covid concerns, and will be re-scheduled for the fall.

 

The Rotary district conference will be in Albuquerque April 7-9 at the Isleta Casino Resort.

Tom Bates said the packets for hygiene project are ready to be distributed to the middle schools. Tom and Jim Callender  purchased the necessary items, and still have $1200. left.  The

decision was made to repeat the process in the fall.

Volunteers were requested to pick up and deliver the packets to the school nurses at G.W. Stout Elementary, La Plata, Harrison Schmitt and Jose Barrios and 6th Street schools.  Art and Sunny K. are going to Jose Barrios and Vlad and Will Hawkings will go to Stout.  Tom asked that pictures be taken, and to ask the nurses for feedback for getting the needed supplies.

 

Will Hawkins said the Fentanyl use is becoming a bigger problem in the Silver school district and it might be something the club could try to address through a community project.

 

Niel McDonald talked about the club auction which is tentatively scheduled for April 23 or April 29, 2023. In the past, the auctions have brought in $40,000 to 60,000. The club keeps 10% or the proceeds, with 90% going to the beneficiaries.

1. A core group should meet monthly.

2. Decide on beneficiaries (no more than 3)

3. A Requests For Proposals will be needed if we decide to select beneficiaries based on applications.   

4. Possibly partner with Kiwanis or Womens' Club? Niel to make 

    calls.

The State of NM and WNMU have lifted mask wearing requirements, regardless of vaccination status. Rotary will do the same.  If anyone is uncomfortable being with a possibly unvaccinated or not boosted person, meetings can be attended via zoom. Email info@silvercityrotary.org for the link.
