Town Manager Alex Brown - Silver City Update
Tuesday, August 12, 2025:
President Ray Goellner presided.
Ray led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Tom Bates gave the invocation. Mark Abramson led the recitation of the Four-Way Test.
Guests: Diane LaBlanc, president of the Silver City Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and our speaker, Lucy Whitmarsh to assist her, and Dr. Thomas Chavez.
Announcements:
Ray announced that there would be a combined meeting of the club board and the Foundation board directly after the meeting.
Program:
Ray introduced Diane LeBlanc, the president of the John Bennett Chapter of the DAR. Diane gave a brief history of the Silver City Chapter, which is one of 16 chapters in New Mexico and which was one of the first chapters to be organized in the state. She explained that, in order to be a member of the DAR, you have to be a woman who can trace her ancestry to a revolutionary patriot. For anyone interested in joining, the DAR provides support for the ancestry search. The DAR supports civic causes, history preservation and raises funds for college scholarships. Diane then spoke about the time capsule project that chapter is currently working on. The time capsule they are creating will have artifacts of Silver City and notes from citizens reflecting statements by or accomplishments of American historical figures, such as former US presidents. The time capsule is to be buried next year, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and is to be opened 50 years later. She passed out note paper, so that meeting attendees could contribute notes for the time capsule.
After a question and answer period, in which Lucy Whitmarsh (picture at left) participated, Ray extended our thanks to Diane for her presentation and then reminded us about the board meeting directly following. He then adjourned the meeting.
