Art gave the invocation. Kathy Eaton led the recitation of the Four-Way Test.
Guests: Lucy Falley, State Representative Luis Terrazas our speaker, and his legislative aide Bruce Ashburn
Announcements: Peter Falley had Happy New Year greetings from Sunny Kellerman and Peter Hirschberg. Jim Callender asked about the non-turnout of students for the lunch that Rotary provided during
their semester break. Everyone who contributed was thanked, but it was decided not to host this again.
Art stated that the Board had approved a slate of officers and board members for July 2025 through June 2026 as follows: President, Ray Goellner; President-elect, Jack Herndon;
Secretary, Jerry Ouzts; Treasurer, Maggie Callaway; Sergeant-at-Arms, Mark Abramson; Board members at-large, Jim Callender and Tom Bates and past president, Art Thorn. Art asked for other nominations. Linda Telaak moved that nominations be closed and cast a unanimous ballot for the recommended slate; Kathy Eaton seconded. Motion passed.
Ray stated he would be taking a zoom PETS training class.
Art said we would be recognizing Taylor McWhorter and her work of raising money for the animal shelter. It has been suggested that we give her a plaque to recognize her service and make a donation to her charity BARC. Ray made a motion that we get a plaque from
Morningstar to present to her and make a donation to her charity: Kathy seconded. Discussion followed wherein Jim agreed to get with Morningstar about the plaque. Peter Falley made a
motion to make a $250 donation to her charity; Ray seconded. Motion passed.
Kathy Eaton said she was asked to evaluate the new Rotary soap, and said it was very nice and fun to use because it lathers up blue, Rotary’s color. She would recommend the smaller ones for speaker gifts.
Happy Dollars:
Anacaite has joined the ACLU. Maggie announced that Monday January 13 is the last day of college courses for her. For 22 years she has been striving to get her Bachelor’s Degree, and
she has finally succeeded!
Program:
Art introduced State Representative Luis Terrazas to talk about key issues to be taken up by the legislative session. He said the Family Medical Leave Act will be coming back. The impact to businesses is large because of the labor problems it creates. Passage will depend on how it’s written, the scope of it, the number of weeks off, participation requirements optional or not, etc. Medical malpractice is another big issue to be addressed along with the Return to Work bill, absenteeism from school, Ft. Bayard preservation, temporary housing for farm workers and others, shortage of teachers and many more. The problem of high insurance rates was also mentioned with many losing their home or commercial insurance or being charged extremely high rates.
After a question and answer period, many revolving around the current situation at WNMU meeting was adjourned at 1:05 pm.
