President Carlos presided. He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance,
gave the invocation, and led the recitation of the Four-Way Test
Guests: Sen Siah Correa Hemphill (our speaker), Lucy Falley, Jerrianne Jones, Gary Latson, Ted Pressler
Candle Baca, Southern NM Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) Business Center, brought flyers and announced the opening of a new MBDA Center office in Las Cruces.
Announcements:
President Carlos announced a Board meeting will be held after the meeting today (May 14).
Jim Callender announced that the Silver City Rotary Foundation Board will meet after the meeting next week (May 21).
Kathy Eaton reminded us that our yard sale/auction will be held on June 1 – she urged everyone to bring items for sale to her place, 3713 Christian Flury Drive. Proceeds from this event will benefit the High Desert Humane Society.
Art Thorn asked for volunteer assistance for the last Bayard Elementary food distribution delivery of the school year -- on Wednesday afternoon, May 15. Meet at 2:00 pm at the Commons. Tom Bates stepped up! (Thank you, Art and Tom and all who have supported this project!)
President Carlos announced that the event Mad City Money, to benefit Cobre Schools, will be held May 15.
Happy Dollars: Jim Callender offered a happy dollar: “I’m happy because Lucy is here.”
Program: Senator Siah Correa Hemphill - Review of recent legislative session
President Carlos introduced our speaker, Senator Siah Correa Hemphill. She saluted Rotary for our many contributions to the community and shared highlights of her term as our state senator. She began her term during the pandemic and many of her early sessions were held on Zoom. She noted that, in this most recent legislative session, $83 million in resources were directed to our community.
Siah addressed the importance of supporting our local legislators and noted that more financial support is needed for those who must travel great distances to attend legislative sessions. She also stressed the need to prioritize funding for education (noting that educators frequently lack the skills they need to manage children affected by trauma) and for mental health support.
