Announcements:
Peter Falley, Rotary Foundation Chair, made a pitch for the Rotary Foundation Annual fund, which depends on our donations for all the wonderful things they do in the world. He asked that each member make at least a minimum $25 contribution annually but try to make it $100. If you haven’t contributed, please do so by means of a check made payable to the Rotary Foundation
and given to him, or go online to rotary.org and click on the donate button and donate there, or go to silvercityrotary.org and click on the donate button there.
Art announced that Sunny and Harry Kellerman are coming to town March 3 and would like to meet and greet with us at the W&Z Restaurant at 6:00 pm on that day.
Tom asked for someone to take pictures of the speaker next week and give to Peter since he will be absent. He mentioned that he had heard from Peter Hirschberg and that his back surgery had gone very well.
Rosie Higgs asked if there was going to be a discussion about the food situation, and Art told her a food committee had been appointed. Ray added they would be meeting after the club
meeting. No meeting venue had been decided upon yet. Ray said they wanted to first speak to the food manager at WNMU, and she was not working today.
Program:

Art then asked Ray Goellner to give his presentation on nutritional supplements. Ray said over the next several months he will be covering the most popular supplements people take and a few common over-the-counter medications also. Vitamins will be discussed in a separate presentation. One of the goals is to identify the products that have scientific evidence behind them, any drug reactions associated with it, and side effects to watch out for.
Coenzyme Q-10 (coq10 )is found in almost every cell in the body and is a powerful antioxidant. It can neutralize free radicals in the body and prevent some of the damage they can cause. It
can help the body recover from and prevent heart attacks. It may also help to lower blood pressure. Co Q-10 is recommended as a supplement for people who take statins. Dietary sources are tuna, salmon, mackerel and other oily fish as well as nuts and whole grains. However, if you do not get enough Co-Q10 from your diet, you may want to take a supplement of 50-200 mg. a day. Ray said Qunol is the best supplement available. Be careful if you are on
a blood thinner; it has mild side effects.
Melatonin is produced naturally by the brain and regulates sleep and wake cycles. It declines with age and can contribute to difficulty in getting a good night’s sleep. It is used to treat
insomnia and jet lag. It is safe for short term use—one to two months. The maximum dose that should be taken is 10mg, and it should be taken one to two hours before bedtime. It may
interfere with low blood pressure and anti-seizure meds. Taken in appropriate doses, it is considered safe with few side effects.
Fish Oil supplements contain omega 3 fatty acids, which help lower triglycerides, maintain healthy vision and help reduce macular degeneration. It has anti-inflammatory properties which help people with asthma and arthritis and help improve cognitive performance and memory. A dose of 1,000 to 2,000 mg per day is recommended.
Garlic supplements are taken for a number of reasons possibly for endometriosis, hardening of the arteries, elevated cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and periodontitis. Effectiveness is
very low.
Lycopene gives some fruits and vegetables their red color, most notably tomatoes. It is a powerful antioxidant that may protect cells from damage and is particularly useful in men because of the prostrate gland. It has been shown to reduce PSA and stabilize prostrate growth. It may also slightly reduce the risk of prostrate cancer. Studies have shown it to be beneficial against bone, lung and prostrate cancer. It has the potential of slowing and stopping
the growth of cancer cells. Dose should be 15 to 45 mg.
Turmeric (curcumin) may be one of the most effective supplements in existence. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. The good supplements have black
pepper which enhances absorption. It may play a part in memory and learning and reduce heart inflammation and help with arthritis. It can contribute to decreasing the growth of cancer cells and reduce growth of tumors. It may help patients with Alzheimer’s by destroying plaque.
Turmeric can be taken in doses of up to one and one-half grams per day. Taking higher doses can result in your skin turning orange. Shouldn’t be taken with anti-diabetic meds and anti-cancer meds.
There are usually no serious side effects.
Always buy supplements from a reputable source. Two good sources are Life Extension and Global Therapeutics.
Acetaminophen/Tylenol is most commonly used as a pain reliever and to reduce fever. It has no anti-inflammatory effects at all. It is never to be used by anyone with severe liver disease or those who consume more than three alcoholic drinks in a day. Due to accidental overdoses the amount that should be taken daily has been decreased from 4,000 mg to 3,000 mg.
Remember to read all labels of other medications because many products contain acetaminophen.
After a question and answer period, Art adjourned the meeting.
