Please turn off your cell phones. Carlos was joined by Sunny Kellerman to talk about our Centennial celebration on Saturday at the Convention Center. 
Our 100-year Proclamation designation November 18 as Rotary Creates Hope in the World Day will be read by the Mayor at the City council meeting at 6 p.m., first on the agenda and please attend if you can.   Carlos and Sunny pictured below.

On November 27th, on honor of our visiting District Governor, there will be a potluck at Sunny and Harry Kellerman's house at 5:30 p.m.

The DG will attend our club meeting on November 28th. Prior to the meeting, there will be a board meeting with the DG at 11 a.m.

Centennial Gala preparation: We will need help decorating 9-5 p.m. this Friday, and instead of a board meeting today we are going directly to the convention center to finalize plans.

On Saturday, the 18th, we have to clean up and be out of the room by midnight, and will need help. The tables can stay. Still need another large steamer, and tablecloths.

 

We did receive a thank you from the Rotary District 5000 Foundation for our Maui fire contribution.

 

Jim:

WNMU Rotary scholarships will now be vocational as well as academic. The GPA requirement is dropped to 2.7 (from 3.0), and applications will be open to freshman through grad students. (Grad students are not eligible for any other state financial assistance.) We will still require an essay about "Service Above Self". Jim will check with George Turner at the WNMU Foundation about the amount of money left in the Rotary scholarship fund and will report on that at a future meeting.

This is Rotary Foundation month. RI gave out 478 Districts grants last year (There are 529 Districts in the world.) Our district divided the District Grant money into 32 individual grants, each of which was for support of a local project in the club's area. The Rotary Foundation supports some huge projects around the world including Global Grants and Disaster Response Grants, such as supplying Ukraine with 50 ambulances. Our District had a Disaster Response Grant during the pandemic to provide relief to the Navajo Nation, where the pandemic had resulted in severe food shortages. Our club contributed $1,000.00 to that project.

All Rotarians are expected to make some monetary contribution every year to the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund (Every Rotarian Every Year also referred to as EREY). Last year, only 4 of our members contributed to the Annual Fund. We really we need to do better.

You can contribute on-line at rotary.org. There is also an option to use Rotary Direct where deductions can be made automatically every month, quarter or year, or you can give Maggie the OK to add an amount for The Rotary Foundation to your quarterly bill. You can also give a check to Maggie or me, made out to The Rotary Foundation and marked as being for the Annual Fund.

Tomorrow, the 15th, Dorothy and I will meet at the Commons Food Bank at 2 p.m., to load up supplies to take to Bayard Elementary.

Jim:

Tom and I spent $400.00 for supplies for the Kids Health and Hygiene Project. This should last until January.

Sunny: We have a list of 20 former Rotarians who should be invited to the Centennial Gal. The list is being passed around; please check if there is someone you could call to inform them about the Gala and to find out how they are.

 

Carlos introduced our speaker, Sophia Whiting, the Hospice Community Liaison for Amber Care in Deming/Silver City.

 

Sophia briefly gave her background--moved to Silver City a year ago, had worked as a Social Worker with Hospice in Florida and North Carolina. Her husband is a nurse practitioner in Santa Clara.

She gave us a rundown on important facts about Hospice: Hospice is a service, not a place. (very few areas have hospice homes.) Staff includes a R.N. who can visit 1-3 times a week, a CNA who assists with bathing and other personal chores, a Social worker and Spiritual Counselor if desired.  All are paid for fully by the Medicare Hospice Program.

Eligibility to go on hospice requires a life limiting illness such as (Cancer, Parkinson's Disease, COPD, ALS) where life expectancy is 6 months or less. If necessary, hospice care can be extended by getting re-evaluated after 6 months and every 60 days after that.

Hospice can be revoked by the patient, and the patient can then get back on it if it becomes necessary. A person can go to the hospital while on Hospice, but patients are encouraged to call Hospice first. You can take your own meds, and see your own doctor. Hospice can help you find services that you need, but you must pay for them. Anyone can refer a patient to Hospice for an evaluation, not just a doctor, but a doctor's order is needed for admission into the progra.

Hospice is a way of changing direction--not of giving up hope.
