Tuesday, July 29, 2025:
President Ray Goellner presided.
Ray led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Tom Bates gave the invocation. Peter Falley led the recitation of the Four-Way Test.
Guests: District Governor Tom Simon, our speaker, his wife Deborah, and Larry Donigan , Assistant Governor and past President of the Deming Rotary Club;
Announcements: Ray said one of the business items to attend to was that the board voted to send $1,000 to the Lincoln County Community Foundation in Ruidoso to assist with flood relief; and since it is over $500, the club membership needs to approve. Mark Richard made the motion to approve; Kathy Eaton seconded, and the motion passed. Ray reminded everyone of the potluck at 5:30 pm at Kathy’s house for a meet and greet with
Tom and Deborah Simon. Ray made a presentation to Mark Abramson with a Paul Harris pin with two red stones, which
means he is a major donor. Maggie Callaway said the club would be participating in Fairgate again this year, September 18-20, and she passed around a signup sheet.
Program:
Ray introduced Tom Simon, our District Governor. Tom thanked us for the invitation to be here. The last time he and Deborah were here was for the celebration of the club’s 100th anniversary. He gave a brief autobiographical sketch of his background. He said that tomorrow he and Deborah would be visiting one of our honorary members Bill Harrison who is 103. Jerry Ouzts read a commendation that Bill would be presented with. Then Tom said he would like to introduce us to another Rotarian who is 157 years old, Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary. Tom then told us Paul Harris’ story. Rotary didn’t start out as a service organization but as a connection with other business people. The first service project ever in Rotary was that the first Rotary club put in comfort stations in Chicago. This service project inspired the dual mottos of “Service above Self” and “He Profits Most who Serves Best.” Rotary believes in sustainability in everything they do. So when they do a district grant or global grant, sustainability is one of the greatest concerns to make sure that what is done is valued long after the Rotarians have left. Tom mentioned some of the service projects of our club—Fairgate, the Hygiene Project, Indian Springs Ranch, Toss No Mas, the work with Commons. He said that, in doing these projects with other groups or organizations, we are embodying this year 's Rotary theme of “Unite for Good.” Rotary has become a peace building organization through its work in other countries. It has led to friendship, cooperation, understanding and recognizing our interconnectedness. Tom gave several examples of Rotary’s work around the world in Ukraine, Israel, Russia through global grants, the engine of peace. He then changed the topic to membership. He said many clubs are struggling to maintain membership. He asked several members to share why they joined Rotary. Tom passed out tools to be used for attracting new members. In conjunction with this Larry Donigan shared that he gives wine tours where he always talks about Rotary to the guests. The District Governor then passed out a calendar of events for the district, and then opened the meeting for questions.
After a question and answer period, Ray adjourned the meeting at 1:00 pm.
