Announcements:
Ray talked about the plan to have an excursion to the Shakespeare Ghost Town near Lordsburg. The plan is to go on November 15, and a decision was made to go for a 2 pm visit. We should work on car pooling arrangements for the trip. Mark Richard reminded everyone of his ongoing art exhibit at the Geisler Studio. The exhibit will be ongoing through the month of October and the proceeds from any sales of the artwork will go to Polio Plus. The Gallery, at 1002 W. Keely St. in Silver City, is open on Friday and Saturday afternoons, but it's a good idea to call in advance to make sure that it is open on a particular day. The phone number is (575) 956-6940.

Program:
Ray introduced Sharla Lefkowitz-Oberg, the Executive Director of Silver City Main Street. Sharla told us that this year is the 40th anniversary of the Silver City Main Street Project. The project came into being in 1985, the year the New Mexico Main Street was established. The Silver City project was one of the five original projects in the state and is the only one that has remained in continuous operation since then. It has state and national accreditation and it has strong community support. The latter accounts in large part for its longevity and effectiveness. The Main Street effort focuses on four pillars: Design, Promotion, Historic Preservation, and Organization. It seeks to support local businesses throughout their life cycle, while trying to insure that the Silver City downtown area maintains its character as a vibrant and attractive area for visitors from within and outside Silver City. Silver City is unique in that all the downtown businesses are locally owned and operated. In fact, some of the downtown business owners actually live in apartments above their stores. There are no big-box stores in the downtown area. The Main Street Project seeks to encourage Silver City residents to shop downtown, recognizing that, of every dollar spent downtown, about 68 cents stays in the community, while of every dollar spent at the big chain stores, only 13 cents stays in the community. Sharla also told us that the Main Street Project hosts community events like the Easter Egg Hunt, the Christmas light parade and the Community Film Festival which just concluded. She told us that the latter was very successful, with almost every showing completely sold out.

After a brief question and answer period, Ray thanked Sharla and adjourned the meeting.
