Presented the club with the Rotary Banner from the Ventura, Ca. Rotary Club, who claims to be the friendliest club in the Rotary.
The sign-up sheet for the September 27 Pasta Potluck is being passed around. 5:30 p.m. at Linda and Ken Lowrance's house.
The Bi-District last week in El Paso was very impressive. Twenty-five projects were presented by mostly Mexican clubs, and the decision was to go with the Juarez Integra Club. The project will help to educate twenty-five future nursing students, at a cost of $4000. per year. The group from our club consisted of Sunny K., Tom Bates, Rosie and Max H. and myself. Rosie was a big help because of her years as a registered nurse.
Sunny K. added that Mexico has only 2.9 nurses per 1000 people, while the recommended ratio is 9:1000. U.S. has 11 nurses per 1000 people and we often feel that is barely sufficient, so it is a very worthwhile project for our $1000.00 commitment.
There are many other worthwhile projects; mainly the Buena Vista water project in Guatemala, which we have been associated with in the past.
Rosie:
Said the tour of hospital and nursing school and facilities in Juarez showed that those facilities were quite good, more than adequate.
Tom:
There will be another tour of hospital etc., on September 8, at 12 noon. Contact Tom if you are interested in joining that tour.
The Chihuahua Club asked if our club would be interested in being an international host for their infant heart surgery project. This is a significant commitment and we have not yet accepted their request.
The Commons Backpack program: Cobre Schools will be involved for the first time. The principals have asked that the kids do the packaging, we just need to provide some supervision.
Blues for Polio fundraiser:
Project is moving along. We have the venue, Light Hall, and the support of WNMU. Mark is looking for a caterer for the reception before the concert. So far, waiting for responses.
Maggie reminded all of Fairgate, September 22-24, and if you have not yet signed up to volunteer, give Maggie a call.
Results of voting for meeting venues. Back to Sunset Room! Except for September 27, which will be a Pasta Potluck at Linda and Ken Lowrance's house at 5:30.
Anthony at Q's, said they could no longer host Rotary because of lack of staff.
Vlad said the Prospectors Club eats in Sunset Room, and Sodexo
provides good food for $9.00 per person. Vlad will investigate further. whether this arrangement might apply for us.
Happy Dollars:
Sunny Kellerman gave happy dollars for Leslie Bush's 10th club anniversary and Jim Tindall's 15th.
Program:
Cheryl Howard, a Board member of the Mimbres Valley Action League, spoke to club members about the League functions and how it assists the community. Howard taught for 21 years at UNM Medical School then taught Sociology at UTEP for 21 years. She moved to Silver City in 2012.
