Announcements:
Ray announced there would be a board meeting today after the club meeting. He reminded everyone of the bake sale on Saturday at the Makers Market to benefit Indian Springs Ranch from 10 to 2. Maggie asked for everyone to be there at 9 to help with setup.
Peter Falley said he had three tickets for a concert on Thursday night to give to whoever wanted them. The other item regarded Taylor McWhorter, the young girl who collected dog food for an organization in Bayard. The club had voted to award her with a plaque and $250 for the NM BARC and so far nothing has been done. He had made out a check to this organization and thought we should go ahead with a plaque and invite her to one of our meetings. After discussion, Jim Callender said he would get the plaque if he could get the wording for the plaque. It was suggested this discussion be continued at the board meeting. Robert Whittaker said he had a couple of things: please wear your Rotary badge when you go through the cafeteria line so you will get the employee discount. Second, he has been doing a series of town hall meetings and the next one will be at the Tyrone community center on Thursday at 6:00 pm, on the 16th he will be in Bayard, and on the 18th in Mimbres. He invited us all to attend. Tom Bates said that on Thursday, the anniversary of 9/11, the Episcopal Church is handing out cookies and letters to all first responders thanking them for what they do. He invited all
Rotarians to join them. Ray said he would be attending the LULAC meeting that evening and would see if we could build a partnership with them.

Program:
Ray introduced fellow Rotarian, architect Mark Richard. Mark began by reminding everyone of the fundraiser being held for the eradication of polio, which has been an ongoing Rotary project for over 30 years. The Gates Foundation does a 2 for 1 match on any money raised by Rotary. For the fundraiser this year an exhibition of his artwork at the Geisler Gallery will have its opening reception on September 27 at 6-7:30 pm. The exhibition will continue at the Geisler Gallery through the month of October (Polio Month), with all proceeds from sales going to the polio project. Mark said he would now talk about what he had been doing for the last 50 years. He discussed several projects he had worked on as an architect, starting with a portable town in Wyoming built to move with the workers. Part of the fun of his job as in architect is meeting all different kinds of clientele and working on all different kinds of projects. He shared a blueprint of the old Elks Club downtown to show an example of construction documents and to demonstrate why they are called blueprints. He passed around a spec book for the renovation of the courthouse to show how detailed it was down to the screws and hinges to be used. He then showed a set of construction documents for some apartments that are going to be built near the hospital to house traveling nurses and doctors, which show details for this site. He mentioned all the codes that have to satisfied in building. Mark said because of the bidding process, when bids come in high, the project has to be revised so it will come in at a lower price. The contractor is then overseen by the architect who okays bills submitted for work done. Change orders can seriously impact the cost of the project. He concluded by showing other examples of projects he had worked on.

After a question and answer period, Ray adjourned the meeting at 12:50 pm.
